SUNY Information Literacy Core Competency

There are three learning outcomes in SUNY’s Information Literacy Core Competency:

1. Students will locate information effectively using tools appropriate to their need and discipline;
2. Students will evaluate information with an awareness of authority, validity, and bias; and
3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the ethical dimensions of information use, creation, and dissemination.

Contributions to Student Success

In April 2016, the Association of College and Research Libraries published the results of a study which focused on dozens of library instruction programs and projects. The study shows how the library contributes to student success and learning in four key areas:

  1. Students benefit from library instruction in their initial coursework.
  2. Library use increases student success.
  3. Collaborative academic programs and services involving the library enhance students learning.
  4. Information Literacy instruction strengthens general education outcomes.
