Library Instruction Portal: Home

This page provides you with everything you need to know about our instruction program.

Introduction

Hello and welcome to our Library Instruction Portal. This resource covers everything about library instruction at Alfred State College's Hinkle Memorial Library, including our Mission, Instruction Policy, Library Classroom layout, Book a Library Session form, Calendar of Classes, ACRL Framework, Assessment, Contact Information, and FAQ.

During the fall and spring semesters, please contact Ron Foster (607-587-4310) to book a class. Please book your classes by noon on Wednesday the week before at a minimum so the Library can plan its weekly work schedule in an orderly fashion.

Summer sessions - contact Joe Petrick (607) 587-4311 to schedule library instruction sessions for your classes.

Mission

It is the mission of the Hinkle Memorial Library's Instruction Program to provide effective and engaging assignment-focused instruction based on the Association of College and Research Libraries' Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education in order to help undergraduate students achieve SUNY's Information Literacy Core Competency.

Instruction Policy

It is the policy of the Library Instruction Program to:

  • accommodate instructor and student needs as much as possible;
  • conduct library instruction sessions oriented around class assignments;
  • require professor attendance during librarian presentations;
  • require classes be booked by noon of the Wednesday of the week before at a minimum.

Please note:

  • library sessions begin on time;
    • students who arrive late are responsible themselves for catching up, not the librarian;
    • class time is tight, so it's at the librarian's discretion to orient students who arrive late;
  • students are required to remove their hoods, headphones, earbuds, and earpods; to put away their phones; and not to use their phones during librarian presentations.

Library Classroom

The Library Classroom is Room 129 in the Library. It is straight in the back on the main floor, near the computers and the printers. The classroom has an instructor's station, laptop, overhead display, whiteboard, HoverCam, and 24 student work stations.
